‍Location: Annapolis, MD (internships are also available at the Archives' Woodlawn, MD facility)

‍Type: Unpaid (volunteer / academic credit)

‍Eligibility: Open to high school students; no history background required — students of all disciplines are encouraged to apply

‍Application Deadline: Apply at least two months before your intended start date — by July 1 for fall, December 1 for spring, or April 1 for summer

‍Program Dates: Flexible; internships can be arranged during the academic year or over the summer, with the student proposing their own start and end dates and weekly schedule

Overview

The Maryland State Archives offers hands-on internships in processing, managing, and interpreting archival collections. Depending on interest, students may work in reference, conservation, research, art history and handling, writing, digital imaging, record transcription, inventorying, cataloging, or accessioning.

Because the schedule is flexible and set by the student, this is a good fit for high schoolers looking to explore archives, history, or museum work alongside their coursework.

To apply, email the Internship Coordinator a cover letter (with your interest, proposed start date, and schedule), a completed Volunteer Application Form, and two references.
