Overview

The Summer High School Internship Program (SHIP) gives students the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at NIST's Gaithersburg, Maryland campus, working alongside NIST staff scientists and engineers on a real research problem.

Interns can explore a range of STEM fields, including physics, chemistry, electronics, computer programming, artificial intelligence, and robotics, gaining hands-on experience well beyond a typical high school classroom.

The program runs for seven weeks each summer and is open to strong students with a demonstrated interest in scientific research. Because it's unpaid and students are responsible for their own housing and transportation, it's best suited for students who live in the local area.
